Dubai vs Singapore for a first family trip abroad

Dubai vs Singapore for an Indian family: both cost about ₹3.6–4.3 lakh for a family of four for 5 days mid-range, and the winner on price depends on your city. Dubai is better from November to March for the desert, shopping and big views, and suits older children. Singapore works all year, is easier to get around by MRT and is better for young children. Both need a visa: the UAE's costs about AED 400–600 all-in, Singapore's ₹2,100 plus a ₹1,300 agent charge.

Visa effort: which is easier?

Both are straightforward but need applying in advance. For Dubai, most families buy the 30-day visa with their airline ticket or through a travel agent. Indians with a valid US visa or green card, or a UK or EU visa or residence permit, may get a visa on arrival instead. Children need their own visa. See the Dubai visa for Indians guide.

For Singapore, the e-Visa is issued only through authorised visa agents, with Form 14A, a photo and a passport valid for 6 months. From 1 January 2026, it costs ₹2,100 plus a ₹1,300 agent charge. See the Singapore visa for Indians guide. Visa rules change, so confirm with the official source before you apply.

Which is cheaper for a family of four?

It is closer than most people expect. Dubai's hotels and food can be cheaper, but its visas cost about four times as much as Singapore's, and many sights need taxis. Singapore's attractions are expensive, but the MRT keeps transport low. For two adults, our Dubai trip cost from Hyderabad is about ₹2.54 lakh mid-range for 5 days, and our Singapore trip cost from Chennai is about ₹2.48 lakh.

Flights decide the answer. From Mumbai, Delhi or Hyderabad, Dubai flights are shorter and often cheaper; from Chennai, Bengaluru or Kolkata, Singapore usually wins. Compare fares for your own dates before you decide.

What will children enjoy more?

  • Under 8: Singapore. Universal Studios, Singapore Zoo and Night Safari (about S$50–60 each per adult, less for children), Gardens by the Bay and short MRT rides.
  • 8–14: either. Dubai's desert safari, Global Village and the Burj Khalifa are big hits; Singapore has Universal Studios, Sentosa and the S.E.A. Aquarium.
  • Teenagers: Dubai, for shopping, theme parks and the desert.

Children under 3 enter many attractions free in both cities, and child tickets usually apply up to age 12, though age limits vary by attraction.

Getting around with children

Singapore is easier. The MRT reaches Gardens by the Bay, Marina Bay, Little India, Chinatown, the zoo area by bus link, and Sentosa via the Sentosa Express; a 3-day Singapore Tourist Pass costs S$29. Contactless bank cards also work at the gates. Distances are short and footpaths are covered.

In Dubai, the Metro covers the airport, Deira, Bur Dubai and Downtown, but Global Village, the Miracle Garden and theme parks need taxis, and the safari includes a pickup. Strollers are easy in malls, but Dubai's summer heat makes outdoor walks hard from May to September.

Food for Indian families

Both are easy. Dubai's Karama, Bur Dubai and Deira have hundreds of Indian restaurants, with South Indian, Gujarati and Hyderabadi food. Singapore's Little India has vegetarian restaurants and Tamil-speaking staff, and food courts (hawker centres) across the city have Indian stalls at S$5–8 a meal.

Best months for each

Dubai is best from November to March; summer daytime heat makes outdoor sightseeing hard. Singapore works all year. It gets heavier rain from about November to January during the north-east monsoon, but showers are usually short. That makes Singapore a good choice for the May–June school holidays and Dubai a good choice for the Christmas and Sankranti or Pongal breaks.

Our verdict

Choose Dubai for a winter family trip with older children, shopping and the desert, especially from Mumbai, Delhi or Hyderabad. Choose Singapore for families with young children, a summer-holiday trip, or anyone who wants to avoid taxis, especially from Chennai, Bengaluru or Kolkata.
