Kerala trip cost from Mumbai: the full table

All three budgets follow the same route: Kochi – Munnar (2 nights) – Alleppey houseboat (1 night) – Kochi (1 night). The only big difference from southern cities is the travel line: from Mumbai, flights are the realistic choice for a 5-day holiday.

What each line includes

Hotels

Budget means a clean homestay or 2-star hotel in Munnar town (about ₹2,000–2,500 a night) and a simple hotel in Ernakulam. Mid-range is a 3-star resort outside Munnar town with a valley view and a decent Kochi hotel. Premium is a 4–5 star tea-estate resort and a heritage stay in Fort Kochi.

Car with driver

A 4-day sedan from Kochi airport covering Munnar, Alleppey and Kochi costs about ₹14,000–16,000 including driver's allowance, toll and parking. Kochi airport is at Nedumbassery, north of the city, which is convenient for Munnar: you avoid Ernakulam city traffic on Day 1.

Houseboat

A private 1-bedroom houseboat with three meals costs about ₹9,000–12,000 for deluxe, ₹13,000–18,000 for premium and ₹19,000–30,000 or more for luxury. Shared overnight boats start at about ₹6,000 per couple, and day cruises of 5–6 hours with lunch cost about ₹7,000–14,000 per couple. Boats usually board at 12:00, anchor for the night and finish at 09:00.

Entries and activities

Eravikulam National Park, the Tea Museum, Mattupetty Dam and a boat ride, and a Kathakali show in Kochi on the budget plan. Mid-range adds a spice plantation walk; premium adds a guided Fort Kochi walk and a private canoe ride through the narrow Alleppey canals.

Should Mumbai travellers fly or take the train?

16346 Netravati Express (return)Overnight and next day back to LTTSimilar faresOnly if you have 8–9 days

For a 5-day trip, fly. The flight is about 2 hours, while the train takes more than a day each way, which turns a 5-day holiday into 7 days away from home. The train makes sense if you have 8–9 days, travel with a lot of luggage, or want the Konkan coastline with its rivers and tunnels as part of the trip. Konkan Railway runs a slower monsoon timetable from mid-June to late October, so check timings for those months.

Allow time for Mumbai airport. From the western suburbs, plan an hour to reach Terminal 2 at peak times; from Thane or Navi Mumbai, check whether your flight uses Navi Mumbai International Airport, which some airlines have started using.

Best time to visit Kerala from Mumbai

Kerala by season for Mumbai travellers
MonthsWeatherPricesNotes
October–NovemberRain easing, very greenHigh in Diwali weekBook Diwali flights 6–8 weeks ahead
December–JanuaryDry and cool in the hillsHighestHouseboats double around New Year
February–MarchDry, warming upLowerEravikulam usually closed about 1 February–31 March
April–MayHot on the coast, pleasant in MunnarMediumSummer holiday crowds in Munnar
June–SeptemberSouth-west monsoonLowestHeavy rain; ayurveda season

Mumbai families travel most in the Diwali week and the Christmas break, when both flights and houseboats are at their most expensive. Mid-January to early February is usually quieter and cheaper, with the same dry weather.

How to cut the Kerala trip cost from Mumbai

  1. Book flights 4–6 weeks ahead. The gap between low and median fares is about ₹2,000 a person each way, or ₹8,000 for a couple's return trip.
  2. Compare midweek departures. Fares on Mumbai–Kochi move with demand; flexible dates often save more than switching airlines.
  3. Avoid the 20 December–5 January houseboat peak.
  4. Hire one car for all 4 days instead of separate transfers.
  5. Stay in Munnar town rather than estate resorts if you want to save; you lose the view, not the access.
  6. Choose a shared houseboat or a day cruise if a night on the water is not essential for you.

Our recommendation

For most couples from Mumbai, fly to Kochi and spend 5 days on the Munnar–Alleppey–Kochi loop: about ₹90,000 for two mid-range, or ₹70,000–75,000 if you book flights early and choose a deluxe houseboat. If you want a beach as well, compare Kerala vs Goa, which is a shorter trip from Mumbai; see how to reach Goa from Mumbai. For the costs from another city, read Kerala trip cost from Hyderabad.
