Kashmir vs Himachal: which mountains, which month

Kashmir vs Himachal comes down to how you travel and when. Kashmir costs about ₹1.31 lakh for two for 6 days mid-range from Delhi by air and gives more reliable winter snow in Gulmarg. Himachal (Manali and Shimla) can be done by overnight Volvo bus from Delhi for about ₹70,000 mid-range, but snow near Manali depends on the Atal Tunnel road being open that day. For a first snow trip with family, pick Kashmir; for a budget road trip with friends, pick Himachal.

Key takeaways

  • Choose Kashmir for a first snow trip, houseboats and a short travel day (a 1h 15m–1h 35m flight from Delhi).
  • Choose Himachal for road trips, tighter budgets and more choice of towns.
  • Rohtang Pass needs a ₹550 vehicle permit and is normally closed from about late November to mid-May.
  • The Atal Tunnel needs no permit, but the road is often shut after heavy snow, with tourists held at Solang.

Which is cheaper, Kashmir or Himachal?

Himachal is usually cheaper because you can reach it by road. HRTC and private AC Volvo buses from Delhi to Manali start at about ₹900–1,200 a seat one way, against ₹5,000–9,000 for a Delhi–Srinagar flight. Hotels in Manali also have a wider budget range, from ₹1,200 guesthouses in Old Manali to riverside resorts.

Kashmir's land costs are higher mainly because of union taxi rates: a Srinagar–Gulmarg sedan is about ₹3,000 for the day, and each valley has its own union for local points. Our Kashmir trip cost from Delhi guide shows about ₹82,500 for two on a budget and ₹1,30,900 mid-range. From Mumbai, add more for flights: see the Kashmir trip cost from Mumbai.

Himachal mid-range estimate: 6 days (3 nights Manali, 2 nights Shimla) for 2 adults from Delhi, October 2026

How long does it take to get there?

Kashmir wins on travel time. Delhi–Srinagar is a short flight, and you can be on a shikara the same afternoon. Himachal by bus takes a night each way, and the Manali–Shimla leg is about 7–8 hours by road, so a 6-day Himachal trip has two full travel days. If you hate long road journeys or have elderly parents with you, that matters more than cost.

Flights to Bhuntar (Kullu) save time but are few, often expensive, and cancelled in poor weather. Chandigarh, with many flights, is a common alternative: from there it is about 4 hours to Shimla and 8–9 hours to Manali.

Where is snow more certain in December and January?

Gulmarg is the safer bet for snow from late December to February. Chillai Kalan, Kashmir's coldest 40 days, runs from 21 December to late January. The Gulmarg Gondola (₹800 Phase 1, ₹1,000 Phase 2 per person) takes you to higher snow at Kongdoori and Apharwat even in a dry week.

Near Manali, snow is likeliest at Solang and around the Atal Tunnel and Sissu. The tunnel needs no permit, but after heavy snowfall the district administration often stops tourist vehicles at Solang, and in past winters many vehicles have been stranded near the tunnel. Adventure activities at Solang are regulated and can be suspended on bad-weather days. Shimla gets snow on only a few days each winter, so do not plan a Shimla-only trip for snow.

Roads, permits and closures

  • Rohtang Pass: ₹550 per vehicle (₹500 permit + ₹50 congestion charge) on rohtangpermits.hp.gov.in, with daily quotas, and the pass is closed to tourists on Tuesdays. It is normally open from mid-May to around November, weather permitting.
  • Atal Tunnel: no permit, but closures after snow are common, and long queues build on weekends.
  • Kashmir: Sonamarg has been reachable in winter since the Z-Morh tunnel opened in January 2025; the Zojila pass beyond stays closed. The Mughal Road is closed for most of winter. The Srinagar–Jammu highway can close for a day or two after snow, which is one more reason to fly.

Food, stays and the feel of each place

Kashmir feels like one destination with day trips: you base yourself in Srinagar and Pahalgam, eat wazwan and kahwa, and spend evenings on the lake. Most houseboats serve home-style Kashmiri meals, and vegetarian food is easy to find.

Himachal feels like a road trip. Manali has a backpacker and café culture in Old Manali and Vashisht, Kasol and Tosh are for younger groups, and Shimla offers the Mall Road and colonial buildings. Prices and choices are wider at every level.

Which is better for families, couples and groups?

  • Families with small children: Kashmir by air. One short flight, a houseboat and Gulmarg snow by Gondola, with no 12-hour bus ride.
  • Families with teenagers: either; Himachal adds paragliding at Solang and river rafting in Kullu in season.
  • Honeymooners: Kashmir in winter or spring for the houseboat and Gulmarg; Manali in October–November for quieter cafés and lower prices.
  • Groups of friends: Himachal. Overnight buses, cheaper stays and the freedom to move between Manali, Kasol and Shimla.
  • Senior citizens: Kashmir, for shorter travel; but Gulmarg's Phase 2 Gondola (about 3,980 m at the top station) may be too high for some, so ask a doctor.

Our verdict

For a first snow trip with family, choose Kashmir and fly: snow at Gulmarg is more dependable, and the travel day is short. For a budget trip with friends, or if you love long drives, choose Himachal, ideally in October–November or March when roads are open and crowds are thin. Whichever you pick, check road status the morning you travel, not the night before. To plan the rest of your year, see where to go in India month by month.
