What each line includes

Travel from Chennai

The budget figure assumes about ₹1,000 per person each way in 3A on the 22639 Alleppey Express to Ernakulam. The full-run 3A fare to Alleppey is about ₹1,140, so the Ernakulam fare is a little lower; Tatkal fares are higher. Mid-range assumes about ₹5,500 per person each way by flight and premium about ₹7,500, for better timings and baggage.

Hotels

Budget means a clean homestay or 2-star hotel in Munnar town (about ₹2,000–2,500 a night) and a simple hotel in Ernakulam. Mid-range is a 3-star resort with a valley view outside Munnar town. Premium is a 4–5 star tea-estate resort and a heritage hotel in Fort Kochi.

Car with driver

A 4-day sedan package from Ernakulam covering Munnar, Alleppey and Kochi costs about ₹14,000–16,000 including the driver's allowance, toll and parking. An Innova for a family of five or six costs about ₹19,000–22,000.

Entries and activities

Budget covers Eravikulam National Park entry and the bus to Rajamala, the Tea Museum, Mattupetty Dam and a boat ride, and a Kathakali show in Kochi. Mid-range adds a spice plantation walk; premium adds a guided Fort Kochi walk and a private canoe ride in Alleppey.

The train is the stronger choice from Chennai. It leaves after work, you sleep through Salem, Coimbatore and Palakkad, and you wake up in Ernakulam ready to drive to Munnar. The same train continues to Alleppey, which helps if you reverse the route and start with the houseboat. Chennai is one of the few big cities where the train matches the flight on useful holiday time for this trip.

IRCTC opens bookings 60 days ahead. For December, Christmas and Pongal dates, book on the first day; 3A and 2A on this train fill quickly in those weeks. If you are waitlisted, the flight is the fallback.

Best time to visit Kerala from Chennai

Kerala by season for Chennai travellers
MonthsWeatherPricesNotes
October–NovemberRain easing, very greenMediumSome afternoon showers in Munnar
December–JanuaryDry and cool in the hillsHighestChristmas and Pongal peaks
February–MarchDry, warming upMediumEravikulam usually closed for Nilgiri tahr calving
April–MayHot on the coast, pleasant in MunnarMediumSummer holidays crowd Munnar
June–SeptemberSouth-west monsoonLowestHeavy rain, landslide risk on hill roads

Chennai families most often travel in the Pongal break in mid-January and the Christmas holidays. Tamil Nadu sets school holiday dates each year in its academic calendar, so confirm yours and book the train and houseboat as soon as you know them. Eravikulam National Park usually closes from about 1 February to 31 March for the Nilgiri tahr calving season, so check the park's site before planning Munnar in those months.

How to cut the Kerala trip cost from Chennai

  1. Take the overnight train both ways. It saves about ₹18,000 for two compared with flights, and you save two hotel nights' worth of time.
  2. Choose a shared houseboat or a day cruise if you only want a few hours on the water: from about ₹6,000 per couple instead of ₹10,500 or more.
  3. Avoid 20 December–5 January. Houseboat prices can double in that window.
  4. Hire one car for the whole loop. A single 4-day package is cheaper than separate transfers.
  5. Eat Kerala meals in Munnar town. A full meals plate costs ₹120–200, far less than resort buffets.
  6. Stay in Ernakulam, not Fort Kochi, on the budget plan. Hotels near the station are cheaper and save the morning drive for the return train.

Kerala with family from Chennai

For two adults and two children, the train is even better value: 3A tickets for children aged 5–11 cost the same as adults if you take a berth, but younger children travel free without one. Most houseboats offer 2-bedroom boats for about 1.5 times the 1-bedroom price. A budget family trip comes to about ₹60,000–70,000.

Our recommendation

For most couples and families from Chennai, the overnight Alleppey Express plus a 4-night Kerala loop is the best-value trip: about ₹46,000 for two, with no daylight lost to travel. If you have only 3 days, skip Munnar and do Kochi plus a houseboat. Deciding between Kerala and a beach holiday? Read Kerala vs Goa.
